Throughout the history of human race, major advances in civilization have been accompained by increase in the rate of energy consumption.

Energy consumption appears to be directly related to the:

• level of living standard of populance

• degree of industrialization of the country

Countries with abundant supplies of energy available to them have shown:

• high rate of industrial growth

• corresponding increase in the gross national product (GNP)
